A Musical Church Choir and Organist: Zion Choir practices weekly on Wednesday evenings at 7 pm at the church from October through May. Our choir enhances worship services with special music and provides leadership for the congregation when singing new hymns. Worship: The first and third Sunday worship services are enriched through the use of traditional liturgical settings. This style of worship is rich in its use of Scripture and music. The second and fourth Sundays feature contemporary music and a simple liturgy. Quarterly on fifth Sundays we begin the worship service with hymns selected by the congregation. At Zion you will find a good mix of traditional and modern music that abounds to the glory of God. A Helping Church Ladies Aid: This women's organization serves God's people in conjunction with the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Their projects vary from special emphasis on missions and Bible study to sponsoring the annual rummage and bake sale in November. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month, and every other meeting includes a potluck. The Ladies host an annual Mother-Daughter banquet at their May meeting. Braille Workers: This group of adults gets together on Monday mornings from 7-11 am to print, bind and mail out the Lutheran Messenger devotional for the blind. They have also helped to print Braille hymnals. They are always looking for new volunteers. Food on the Fourth: The church takes up a monthly door offering in support of the Carlinville Food Pantry, and our volunteers help to staff the Food Pantry on 4th Wednesdays from 2-4 pm and with occasional box packing days. Thrivent: Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is a Lutheran fraternal organization whose members have life or health insurance, annuities or other financial products. Thrivent uses their profits to help with many worthwhile church, school and community causes. They also sponsor financial and legal workshops for the benefit of their members and the church. Recently they led a workshop for the church on Teens, Parents and Money Matters. | A Learning Church Bible Classes: The Sunday morning adult Bible class meets in the fellowship hall at 9 am. The purpose is to study and discuss the Bible, church doctrine and other subjects of interest. Other midweek Bible study groups meet on Wednesday 6 am at Abella's Cafe (men), Wednesday afternoon at 1 pm (all ages) and Thursday afternoon at 12:30 pm (young women). Sunday School: The Sunday School (Sundays at 9:15 am) provides the opportunity for children and youth to grow closer to Jesus through the ministry of His Word. Classes are available from age three through high school. Preschool: Christianity reflects the love of Christ and is an asset to your child through his or her life. The goal of our preschool is to prepare children socially, spiritually and academically for Kindergarten. Four-year-olds meet Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 9 to 11:30 am. Three-year-olds meet Tuesday/Thursday from 9 to 11 am. Pastor has a devotion with the students Friday morning. Confirmation/Midweek: Opportunity is given our young people for Bible instruction in confirmation classes. These classes meet on Wednesday afternoons during the school year. There is confirmation class for 7th and 8th grade students and midweek class for 5th and 6th grade students. These classes instruct young people in the basic teachings of the Lutheran Church and how to apply these teachings to their lives. Youth Group: Fellowship and fun give the youth a chance to grow in Christ and get to better know each other. A Senior Group for high school students and a Junior Group for 5th through 8th grade students meet occasionally. The meetings center on Bible study, fellowship and fun. They also undertake occasional service projects locally and in other states/countries to spread the love of Christ. VBS: Vacation Bible School is normally held for a week of evenings in July. The program includes lessons correlated to a general theme, crafts, games and refreshments and will help to continue the Christian education of our youth. College Ministry Since Blackburn College is right here in Carlinville, we try to provide a welcoming home for college students away from home. We also send out care packages to our college students and try to keep them informed through Reapings newsletter mailings. |
